Dear Qur’an Lover,
I am so happy that you chose my website to learn how to read Qur’an. Even though my website is not complete yet, it has enough content now to accommodate your needs to learn the basics of how to read Qur’an in Arabic. The uploaded documentation will also help you plan your best deed — teaching it to others!
Listening to the Qur’an being recited correctly is enough to soften even the hardest of hearts. Muslims or non-Muslims find it a deeply moving experience even if they do not understand what is being said. Every single Muslim has to recite Qur’an in daily prayers (Salah), but many of us do not realize that reciting the Qur’an correctly and observing the rules of recitation is not an advanced science for expert reciters alone — rather it is an obligation upon each and every one of us whenever we recite the Qur’an.
What is Tajweed?
The word Tajweed linguistically means ‘proficiency’ or ‘doing something well’. It comes from the same root letters as the word ‘Jayyid’ in Arabic (meaning ‘good’). When applied to the Qur’an, it means giving every letter its rights and dues of characteristics when we recite, and observing the rules that apply to those letters in different situations.
The Qur’an was revealed with Tajweed rules applied to it. When the Angel Gabriel (Jibreel A.S.) recited the words of Allah to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), he recited them in a certain way and showed the Prophet (PBUH) the ways in which it was permissible to recite the Qur’an. It is upon us to observe those rules so that we recite it the way it was revealed.
At the time of the Prophet (PBUH) there was no need to study Tajweed because they spoke naturally with what is now known as Tajweed. When the Arabs started mixing with the non-Arabs as Islam spread, mistakes in Qur’an recitation appeared, and scholars began recording the rules. Today, even Arabs have to study Tajweed because the everyday Arabic has changed so much from the Classical Arabic of the Qur’an.
Learning Path
Knowing that learning Qur’an is an endless process, I am committed to preparing students to achieve certain levels that enable them to live Islam based on its main source, The Holy Qur’an. There are 6 significant steps in my Quran class model:
- Elementary Level (partially completed on this website)
- Memorization Level 1
- Memorization Level 2
- Hifz Track — Memorization of the entire Qur’an
- Qur’anic Arabic
- Maqamat (Musical modes) of Qur’an
In this website, I aim to cover the elementary level’s basic rules within 10 lessons.
Expected Student Learning Outcomes
After successfully completing the elementary level, students will be able to:
- Pronounce Qur’anic verses and supplications correctly without changing their meanings.
- Apply and articulate Tajweed rules correctly.
- Read major chapters and supplications correctly, and recognize chapters that help them read Qur’an more fluently.
- Continue reading Qur’an independently, identifying their own mistakes.
- Recite supplications and chapters required for daily prayers and other acts of worship.
- Begin Memorization Level studies.
